Classically, telecommunications in Austria were first under government's supervision, monitored by the Ministry for Transport. Later, in 1996, postal and telecom services were joined in a company named Post und Telekom Austria AG, which was then divided into two branches: Telekom Austria AG and Osterreichische Post AG. The newly created telecom was mostly privitized, with some percent belonging to federal powers. Since 1998, when the market became privately owned according to EU's definition, Austrian telecommunication services have greatly developed and now present one of the most competitive and fair markets in Europe and in the world. Not as large, as German telecommunication market, it is though quite advanced and forward-looking.

Due to healthy competition the major GSM (3G) networks offer low prices and good quality services, providing the cheapest plans across Europe. One of Austrian main operators, mobilkom, has managed to penetrate into other countries. Other largest competitors in the market are Orange, tele.ring, MVNO, Hutchison 3 Austria, and T-Mobile. Most of them provide 2G and 3G mobile services and the whole range of offerings. Not only mobile phoning is highly developed in Austria, but the landline telephony also has great productivity, providing both domestic, long-distance and internetional calls at top levels. Any signs of monopoly in the market are strongly tracked by the correspondent authorities.

Internet in Austria is mostly based on DSL and cable technologies, offered to cutomers through main ISPs. These are Inode, Tele2, UPC, Telekom Austria and Kabelsignal. Mobile Internet technologies gain popularity, as the market develops rapidly, and the companies offer better services due to strong competition. By now, every second citizen is a mobile web user, with a growing tendency to subscribe to the services.

As to radio technologies in Austria, there are over 150 FM stations, and 2 AM ones, providing several million radios. Television is served by 45 broadcasters, of which the three main corporations are ORF, ATV, and Puls 4 (the two last of them are privately owned). Digital TV has also gained great population. Among standard services Austrian companies offer VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), VoD (Video on Demand) and iTV.
